  • Safety.ChurchofJesusChrist.org has a fun new video about lightning safety.

Lightning and other health and safety risks are especially high during the summer months when members are participating in Church activities such as pioneer treks, youth conferences, Scouting and Young Women camps, and outdoor ward parties.

The Church's new website, safety.ChurchofJesusChrist.org, helps Church members and leaders benefit from increased awareness and safety as they serve and participate in these types of activities as well as educates members about other health risks. “We want people to enjoy an activity but to be safe doing it,“ says Alan Rogers, a senior safety manager for the Church.

One of the highlights of the new health and safety site is a fun and creative video called “Lightning Safety: An Interview with Sam Cloud” (watch above). Using animation, character acting, and witty dialogue, the Church presents information that helps people understand what to do in case of lightning.

“Our overall goal was to present a difficult topic in an engaging and memorable way,” said Brother Rogers. “We have developed several videos over the last couple of years for topics like activity planning, drowsy driving, and leader fitness that are thought provoking. For example, when people see the lightning safety video, they indicate that they learned something new.”

There is no “safe place” outdoors during a lightning storm. Get inside as soon as you can.

Steve Hoskins, also a member of the Church’s risk management team, helped develop the videos. He said, “I am impressed that most of our actors and supporting crew all recognize that what they are doing is special, that the goal of these videos is to keep someone from injury or death. They are delighted to be part of such a worthwhile endeavor rather than just entertaining them—although that is fun too. I was impressed with how the Sam Cloud video came together.”

The site doesn't cover every aspect of safety, but according to Brother Rogers, “We point website visitors in the right direction as we highlight additional resources while promoting and providing insights and training on the basic principles of safety.”

According to Mike Taylor, chief safety officer for the Church, another purpose for the website is to provide educational programs addressing safety and health risks, such as communicable diseases in a ward nursery.

Visitors to the site can find fact sheets on food safety, heat illness prevention, tick bites, and other health and safety issues.
