ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND
Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo—who was featured in the Church-produced documentary “Meet the Mormons”—was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Brother Niumatalolo, 51, led the Midshipmen to a 7-1 conference record in 2016, clinching the West Division title and earning a spot in the December 3 conference championship game. Offensive production has defined the season. Navy is second in the NCAA in rushing yards, 11th in scoring at 41.7 points per game, and has the second-fewest turnovers (9) of any team in the nation.
Following the December 3 contest against Temple, the Midshipmen will wrap up their regular season with the annual Army-Navy game on December 10 and then begin preparations for a bowl game.
A native of La'ie, Hawaii, Brother Niumatalolo is a lifelong member and served a mission in California before playing quarterback at the University of Hawaii. He and his wife, Barbara, are the parents of three children.
