The free public open house for the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple begins today, March 12, and will run through Saturday, March 30, 2019, excluding Sundays.
Following the open house, dedicatory services for the Kinshasa temple will be held on Sunday, April 14. Additionally, a devotional for youth will be held prior to the dedication on Saturday, April 13, and will be broadcast to all the congregations of the Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple District.
The Kinshasa temple will be the 163rd operating temple in the world and the fourth operating temple on the African continent. It was announced by President Thomas S. Monson during October 2011 general conference, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 12, 2016. The groundbreaking was presided over by Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Three other temples in Africa currently in operation are located in Johannesburg, South Africa; Accra, Ghana; and Aba, Nigeria. Three more temples have been announced for Harare, Zimbabwe; Nairobi, Kenya; and Abijan, Côte d’Ivoire. The Durban South Africa Temple is under construction.
Sitting on nearly five acres located in the Quartier Basoko, Ngaliema, area of Kinshasa, the exterior of the temple is constructed of white plaster with a zinc roof, and the surrounding temple grounds feature a variety of local plants and flowers. The more than 12,000 square feet of interior flooring is constructed of stone from Egypt and tile from South Africa, which accompanies the geometric and diamond motifs featured in the interior design.
