How to pray

Begin by finding a quiet place where you are comfortable speaking with God (either out loud or in your mind). When you start your prayer, it’s always good to address God by name. You could try “Dear God,” “Dear Heavenly Father,” “Our Father which art in heaven,” or simply “God.” Next, open your heart and begin a conversation about whatever is on your mind. You can ask God for help, direction, forgiveness, healing, or anything else you need. Finally, express appreciation to God for all the blessings in your life. When you’re ready, you can close your prayer by saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.”

What to pray for

Prayer can be a personal conversation between you and God. Don’t hesitate to share with Him your hopes and desires, your fears, your struggles, and your successes. You can pray for yourself, for others, or simply just to connect with your Heavenly Father.

How God answers prayers

The way that God answers prayers isn’t “one size fits all.” It's important to remember that God always hears your prayers, but His guidance can come in several different ways. As you seek His direction, it can be helpful to look for answers in the thoughts and feelings that come from His Holy Spirit as you study the scriptures, spend time in sacred places, and seek inspired counsel from loved ones. If you're still struggling to hear His voice, know that it’s OK. Try to be patient and hopeful as you continue to pray to Him in faith. Know that God is always there—even when it seems like He’s silent.

The blessings of prayer

Through the power of prayer, you can find answers to questions, comfort from the chaos of the world, strength to overcome challenges, and guidance in times of confusion. Prayer can also help you develop a personal relationship with God and instill confidence in your identity as one of His children.

Missionaries can help you grow closer to God as you strive to make your prayers more personal. Together we can learn how to recognize God’s answers and follow His counsel. Sign up for a visit to meet with us, pray with us, and learn more about the benefits of prayer in your day-to-day life.

4 ways to make your prayers more meaningful:

1. Minimize distractions

Before you pray, find a quiet place where you can be alone. Silence your phone and take a moment to clear your mind.

2. Imagine talking to a loving parent

God is the most powerful being in the universe, but He is also your Father. As you pray, try to visualize His face filled with the love He has for you.

3. Pray from the heart

When you pray, be open and honest about how you feel. You can use prayer as an opportunity to express love and gratitude, share disappointments and frustrations, and seek counsel in all areas of your life.

4. Take a moment to reflect

When you finish praying, pay attention to any thoughts or feelings that come to mind. Sometimes God’s guidance comes when we give Him time to answer.
