5 Facts You Should Know about the Book of Mormon
Like the Bible, the Book of Mormon is an ancient record that teaches about Jesus. It can help you come closer to God and find direction for your own life as you read its stories and teachings. Here are five things you should know.
The Book of Mormon is the word of God
Just as God spoke to Moses and Noah in the Bible, He also instructed His prophets in ancient America. These prophets were inspired to keep a record of their history and teachings. Their writings were eventually gathered into one book by a man named Mormon. The Book of Mormon teaches of Jesus’s life and ministry and testifies of His power to save us from sin and death. The highlight of the Book of Mormon is when Jesus comes to visit the people in the ancient Americas. The record of His visit is both profound and tender as it shares both Jesus’s teachings and interactions among the people.
The Bible and the Book of Mormon support each other
Jesus frequently compared Himself to a shepherd. He often spoke of His love for those who follow Him, whom He called His sheep. In John 10:16, while speaking to the people in ancient Palestine, He declared, “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”
Who were the other sheep Christ spoke of in that parable? The history of some of these “other sheep” is recorded in the Book of Mormon.
In addition, the Apostle Paul taught, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). When God teaches an important principle, He sends another source to confirm it. The Book of Mormon is a second witness to the testament of Jesus Christ given by the Bible. The combined witness of both these books of scripture can broaden and deepen our understanding and testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ.
It can bring you closer to God
