The Bible teaches, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). The Book of Mormon supports the Bible and is a second witness of the life, teachings, and divinity of Jesus Christ.
Another testament of Jesus Christ
The official title of The Book of Mormon is “The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” Its purpose is to help us come to know Jesus. Jesus is mentioned 3,925 times throughout the book, which equates to a mention every 1.7 verses, on average.
The Book of Mormon contains 100 names or titles of Jesus throughout its pages. Whether He is called “the Creator,” “the Advocate,” “the Shepherd,” or “the Rock,” each has a slightly different meaning and provides a better understanding of who Jesus is. The Book of Mormon is full of stories and teachings like this that enhance our learning and deepen our understanding of Jesus.
“And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.” —2 Nephi 25:26
A deeper understanding of Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness and the grace of Jesus Christ
The Book of Mormon helps us better understand Heavenly Father’s plan of happiness and the grace of Jesus Christ. In addition to teaching that Jesus offered Himself “a sacrifice for sin” (2 Nephi 2:7), the Book of Mormon teaches that Jesus suffered for our pains, sicknesses, and infirmities. He knows what it feels like to endure small daily struggles, carry heavy burdens, or endure trials that seem insurmountable.
“And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.” —Alma 7:12

Touching accounts of Jesus’s love
Jesus spent His mortal life near Jerusalem, teaching the Jews His gospel. After His Resurrection, Jesus taught His followers in ancient Palestine. Jesus also visited His followers in the ancient Americas. The Book of Mormon records Jesus’s visit to the Americas and shares tender accounts of His interactions with the people. These scriptures provide a more full understanding of Jesus’s love and compassion.
“And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you.
“Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels are filled with mercy. …
“And it came to pass that when he had thus spoken, all the multitude, with one accord, did go forth with their sick and their afflicted, and their lame, and with their blind, and with their dumb, and with all them that were afflicted in any manner; and he did heal them every one as they were brought forth unto him.
“And they did all, both they who had been healed and they who were whole, bow down at his feet, and did worship him; and as many as could come for the multitude did kiss his feet, insomuch that they did bathe his feet with their tears.” —3 Nephi 17:6–7, 9–10
The Bible notes Jesus’s love for little children, and the Book of Mormon provides added accounts of how He ministered to them.
“And he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them. …
“And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones.
“And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them.” —3 Nephi 17:21, 23–24
The Book of Mormon is evidence that God extends the same blessings and opportunities to all of His children. Godʼs love isnʼt confined to people from a single area of the world. No matter where we live or who we are, no matter what language we speak or what we look like, God loves us and wants us to hear His truth.
Draw nearer to God
The Prophet Joseph Smith declared “that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 64). As you read the stories and teachings in the Book of Mormon, you can come to know Jesus better, increase your faith in Him, and enjoy more fully the power of His grace in your life.
