What Is My Life’s Purpose?
God has a plan for you. He loves you and wants you to succeed.
You are not here on earth by accident. If your life feels like it has become an endless cycle of pointless tasks or empty entertainment, know that you were meant for far more than just existing day by day.
To understand your purpose, it helps to go back to the beginning. Your life’s story begins before you were born, when you existed as a spirit in heaven with God and the rest of His spirit children. God created a plan to help you—and all of His children—learn and grow to become like Him. He sent you to earth to receive a physical body and to face challenges that would help you become stronger.
God’s plan is not random. It is carefully designed to give you the experiences you need to return to Him again as a better and more experienced person. The challenge is to have faith in His plan even though you don’t have all the answers.
So how can you follow God’s plan?
Follow Jesus Christ
Because we all make mistakes, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to atone—or make amends—for our sins. He suffered and died for us so that if we sincerely repent, our sins will be forgiven and we can once again be worthy to live in God’s presence.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
When you accept Jesus and follow His example, you can enjoy greater love, peace, joy, and sense of purpose. Two of the most important ways you can follow His example are:
The purpose of God’s plan is to provide us with eternal happiness. The more you understand His plan, the more you realize you can’t make it back to God on your own. He made it possible for every sin and every mistake you make during this test of life to disappear and be forgotten through Jesus Christ.
You can show your love and gratitude to your Heavenly Father by following His commandments—including the commandment to be baptized—and by repenting when you make mistakes. It takes continuous effort to return to God. But through Jesus Christ, who is key to God’s plan, you can do it.
Giving and receiving love adds meaning to life. When you show love to others, you draw closer to God and can better understand His love for all of us. As the Bible teaches, “Every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God” (1 John 4:7).
Your actions have the power to greatly bless the lives of your family, friends, and others around you. As you try to follow Jesus’s example of kindness, you leave your mark and make the world a better place. Don’t underestimate the potential you have to influence others for good, whether by your service or your example.
