About Choral at Temple Square and Orchestra at Temple Square

The Chorale at Temple Square and Choir School were organized in 1999. They are designed to serve as a training venue for new singers completing their audition process for The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and as an in-service program for currently serving singers.

The Chorale is conducted by Ryan Murphy, associate music director of The Tabernacle Choir. Cherilyn Worthen has been the director of the Choir School since 2006 and oversees the 16-week training program for new members who are then prepared to join The Tabernacle Choir. Cherilyn volunteers her time as Choir School director and is an associate professor of choral music education at Utah Valley University. She is supported by faculty members Rebecca Wilberg, the Choir’s vocal coach (also a volunteer), and Temple Square organists Linda Margetts and Joseph Peeples, who give instruction in music theory and assist in Chorale rehearsals. Each spring, the Chorale prepares and presents major choral works in collaboration with the Orchestra at Temple Square.

The Orchestra at Temple Square is an all-volunteer musical organization formed in 1999 at the direction of Gordon B. Hinckley, then president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as part of changes to The Tabernacle Choir organization. For the past twenty years, the Orchestra has uplifted, inspired, and given joy to audiences around the world providing instrumental support to The Tabernacle Choir in the weekly broadcast of Music & the Spoken Word. Its charter is to accompany the musical ensembles of The Tabernacle Choir organization and to perform in concerts of its own.
