Part of a series to help you conquer the skills of daily life.
Having good manners is important wherever life takes you. When we’re respectful, we become more like Jesus Christ. We represent our family and the Church well. We set an example for others to follow.
Below are tips for two occasions when our manners are particularly noticeable.
Tips for mealtime:
- Let your hosts know ahead of time if you’re allergic to any food.
- Watch your hosts and follow their example of how to eat. In some cultures, people eat with their hands. Others eat with silverware. Follow their lead.
- Thank them for the food and eat what you are served, even if it’s not your favorite. For some families, feeding a guest is quite a sacrifice.
- If you do have to say no to a dish—for a health reason, for example—do so nicely. Be mindful of your hosts’ feelings. Remember that cooking usually takes a lot of work.
- Pay attention to those you’re eating with. Mealtimes are usually a time to talk and connect. Which leads us to …
Tips for making conversation:
- Introduce yourself to new people, and introduce others so everyone knows each other.
- Make sure your body language is respectful. Smile. Look at people (not your phone) when they are speaking to you.
- Don’t interrupt others. Listen to what they are saying instead of thinking about what you’ll say next.
- Talk about things everyone can talk about. Try not to leave anyone out.
- Say “please” and “thank you.”
The most important guideline to remember is simple: be kind! If you’re not sure how to act, act with kindness. It’s always good manners to show others you care.
