How to Respond with Christian Courage

11/03/20 | 1 min read
Be meek and loving when people criticize the Church.

Hearing someone question or criticize your beliefs might make you angry, but we have the Savior to look to for an example. Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught that “when we respond to our accusers as the Savior did, we not only become more Christlike, we invite others to feel His love and follow Him as well.”

“Winning” the argument isn’t important. “Our primary concern must be others’ welfare,” Elder Hales said. “Our aim should be to help them understand the truth, not defend our egos or score points.”

And don’t worry about being an expert. Elder Hales said, “Our heartfelt testimonies are the most powerful answer we can give our accusers. And such testimonies can only be borne in love and meekness.”¹
