Activity: Protecting and Preserving the Environment

10/23/19 | 1 min read

Purpose

Protect, preserve, and restore in your area the beautiful earth the Lord has created for us.

Activity Suggestion

Help your group learn ways you can take care of the environment—both where you live and around the world. You can find information online or invite someone who knows a lot about the environment to talk with your group.

For example, you could learn how to recycle and save energy in your community. Invite a local expert to speak to your group about trash services and water facilities or schedule a visit to a local recycling plant or landfill. Try setting a group goal to create less waste by recycling, turning off lights, and using less water, and then track your group’s progress over the next month. How much water and energy did your group save? How did your group recycle and repurpose its used items?

Please adapt activities as necessary to ensure all individuals are able to participate, belong, and contribute.

Adaptation Ideas

  • Invite an expert to teach your group about plants and how they help the environment. Afterward, plant trees or other vegetation in your community to decrease air pollution and soil erosion.
  • Composting is a natural way to help the environment by recycling organic materials (such as yard clippings, nutshells, or old fruits and vegetables) to create compost, which can help improve soil. Learn about the different kinds of composting and how to make your own compost pile.

Discussion

Encourage youth to talk about how what they are learning can help them and others grow closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity and should last just a few minutes. You could ask questions like the following:

  • Why do you think it is important to take care of the environment?
  • When have you been blessed by taking care of the environment?
  • How does protecting and preserving the environment show our gratitude to God for His creations?
