Elder Hugo E. Martínez was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 5, 2014. At the time of his call, he had been serving as a member of the Fourth Quorum of the Seventy in the Caribbean Area. He has served as President of the Africa West Area, as a member of the Caribbean Area Presidency, and in Salt Lake City at Church headquarters. He currently serves as First Counselor of the Utah Area.
Elder Martínez has served in numerous Church callings, including bishop, elders quorum president, district president, counselor in a mission presidency, president of the Guatemala City Central Mission (2005–2008), and Area Seventy.
Elder Martínez completed his premedical studies at the University of Mississippi, received a medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, and completed a family practice residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Elder Martínez worked for 20 years as a family physician and medical consultant before retiring in 2004.
Hugo Edgardo Martínez was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, on January 10, 1957. He married Nuria Merced Alvarez Pagan in December 1980. They are the parents of five children.
