In December 1830, the Lord commanded Latter-day Saints they should “assemble together at the Ohio” (
Doctrine and Covenants 37:3). In a revelation received the following month, the Lord promised that in Ohio, the Saints would receive His law, be endowed with power from on high, and be prepared to share His gospel among all nations (
Doctrine and Covenants 38:32–33). In Ohio, the Saints built a temple—a place of learning, worship, and revelation. Joseph Smith received many revelations to guide the government of the Savior’s restored Church and to guide the individual lives of Church members.
Tours and exhibits are available at the site year round to share the experiences of early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who gathered in Kirtland in the 1830s. Visitors are invited to tour the N.K. Whitney & Co. Store, the Newel and Elizabeth Ann Whitney Home, the reconstructed N.K. Whitney Ashery, a replica sawmill, a schoolhouse, the John Johnson Inn, the refurbished Joseph and Emma Smith Home, and the Kirtland Temple.
For decades, Community of Christ preserved and cared for the
Kirtland Temple. On March 5, 2024, ownership and stewardship of this beloved landmark was transferred to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
