Code of Conduct and Common Questions for Historic Nauvoo

We invite you to familiarize yourself with Historic Nauvoo’s code of conduct as well as review answers to common questions to help you prepare for your visit.

Respect Others

  • Please be kind and respectful of other visitors to the site.
  • Respect missionaries by being attentive as they give tours.
  • Clean up after yourselves, put away interactive activities, and dispose of trash properly.
  • Respect cars and use sidewalks.
  • Respect private properties that are not a part of Historic Nauvoo.

Respect Buildings

  • Please be respectful of the buildings at the site, especially the historic buildings.
  • Respect gated off areas and historical artifacts, furniture, and walls in the buildings.

Respect Landscapes

  • Stay on designated paths or sidewalks.
  • Refrain from harming trees, plants, and other landscape features.

Common Questions

Food and drink are not allowed indoors. Baby bottles and water bottles with closable lids are allowed inside the historic homes and visitors’ center.
Trained service animals are allowed wherever a person can go in Historic Nauvoo, including in historic buildings.
Emotional support, comfort, or companion animals are not allowed at Historic Nauvoo.
Pets are not allowed at Historic Nauvoo. Pets on leashes are welcome at the nearby Nauvoo State Park. Check the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website for details.
There is no coat or bag check at Historic Nauvoo.

If you’re coming with a large group, you will need to complete the Group Reservation Request for Illinois Historic Sites. A missionary will contact you to follow up and finalize your reservation. Please be aware that we are not able to arrange lodging, food, or transportation. Visit the Group Visits Page for more information.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, tickets are required to take a wagon or carriage ride. Free tickets are available at 7:00 a.m. central time the day of the ride. They can be reserved by visiting Historic Nauvoo’s Eventbrite page. Please be aware that there is a limit of five tickets per email address.
We encourage still photography at Historic Nauvoo! If you post your photos on Facebook, please tag us @historicnauvoo.
Filming or recording is not allowed during guided tours, demonstrations, or performances.
Historic Nauvoo and Carthage Jail operate in English. Depending on availability of missionaries at the site, tours in Spanish and Portuguese may be available upon request. Live translation is provided for the Nauvoo and British Pageants in Spanish. All other events at Historic Nauvoo and Carthage Jail are conducted in English only.

Please call 1-877-399-3046 ahead of time to verify availability of tours, then check-in at the guest services desk in the Historic Nauvoo Visitors’ Center when you arrive for language assistance.
