What to Expect in Historic Nauvoo

If you are visiting Historic Nauvoo for the first time, navigating the many things to do can be both exciting and daunting. We recommend that you begin your visit at the Historic Nauvoo Visitors’ Center. There, you will receive a brief orientation to Nauvoo and the many experiences to participate in. Missionaries are available to answer your questions and provide suggestions for your visit.

Once you leave the visitors’ center, there are many historic locations to see, activities to participate in, and events and performances to attend. You may begin anywhere but Historic Nauvoo is best experienced by focusing on one of several themed districts that each tell a unique story:

Getting Around Historic Nauvoo

Historic Nauvoo covers two square miles. There is no public transportation within the historic site, so we recommend driving to key locations and then getting out and walking. View a map of parking in Historic Nauvoo.

If you want to see the sites quickly, you can take a wagon or carriage ride around Historic Nauvoo.

Cell Phone Access


There is cellular service available throughout Historic Nauvoo. Depending on your service provider, some locations may have weaker reception.

Wi-Fi Access


The Church’s Liahona network is available throughout the site, although service may be weaker in some buildings. If you need the Wi-Fi password, please speak to a missionary.

Language Availability


Historic Nauvoo and Carthage Jail operate in English. Depending on the availability of missionaries at the site, tours in Spanish and Portuguese may be available upon request. Live translation is provided for the Nauvoo and British Pageants in Spanish. All other events at Historic Nauvoo and Carthage Jail are conducted in English only.

Please call 1-877-399-3046 ahead of time to verify the availability of the tours. Check in at the guest services desk in the Historic Nauvoo Visitors’ Center when you arrive for language assistance.
