The Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Monument features a life-size bas-relief sculpture depicting the moment on May 15, 1829, when John the Baptist appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery to confer the Aaronic Priesthood upon them.
The monument, designed and executed by renowned Latter-day Saint sculptor Avard Fairbanks, was completed using funds donated from over 60,000 Aaronic Priesthood holders. When the monument was constructed in June 1960, the names of the young men who donated to the project were sealed in a box inside the base of the monument.
