Two brown horses tied to a post with a carriage and fall foliage in the background.
One man is driving a large carriage while another man with a microphone talks to other people out of frame.
A sleigh full of people is drawn across a snowy landscape by two black horses.
Hear stories about Nauvoo while riding on a horse-drawn carriage through the scenic landscape. The carriage passes through the countryside to a view of the Mississippi River while a narrator relates stories from the journals of the men and women who lived in Nauvoo in the 1840s.

If there is enough snow during winter months, the Carriage Depot serves as the starting point for sleigh rides. During the sleigh ride through the wooded area north of the historic district, missionaries share inspirational stories of faith appropriate for the season.

What to Expect

The carriage and sleigh rides are additional Pioneer Life experiences. The carriage ride is approximately 35 minutes, and the sleigh ride is approximately 25 minutes. Both experiences are narrated by missionaries.

Tickets are required for the carriage ride from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Rides are available Monday–Saturday. Tickets can be reserved the day of your visit starting at 7:00 a.m. central time. Visit Historic Nauvoo’s Eventbrite page to reserve your tickets on the day you would like to take a ride. If you have questions about ticketing, please visit the Ticketing FAQ page.

Tickets are not required for the sleigh ride during the winter months.

Parking

  • There is parking available on the south side of the carriage depot.
    • There are designated accessible parking spaces in the lot. However, the ADA parking is closer to the entrance of the visitors’ center than to the carriage depot.
