Before the tour of Carthage Jail, visitors are welcomed into the Carthage Jail Visitors’ Center.

What to Expect


The Carthage Jail tour begins in the Carthage Jail Visitors’ Center. In the Visitors’ Center missionary guides provide a brief orientation and show a short video.

Parking

  • There is parking available in a lot to the northeast of Carthage Jail.
    • There are two designated ADA parking spaces.

Terrain and Flooring


Exterior

  • Parking lot: Asphalt (excellent condition); level
  • Sidewalk: Concrete, brick, and wax polymer (good condition); level
  • Terrain: Grass and wax polymer (excellent condition); level
  • Entryway: Ramp with two handles.

Mansion House

Carthage Jail

Following increased opposition and the destruction of a printing press, Joseph and Hyrum Smith were taken to Carthage Jail. While the brothers were awaiting trial, an armed mob stormed the building and killed the two men. Latter-day Saints mourned their deaths, and today Carthage Jail stands as a memorial to the brothers.
