Supplemental Privacy Notice (Missionary Activity)(Updated 2020-06-16)


In this Supplemental Privacy Notice, we, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the “Church”), provide you with information about how we process, collect and use “personal data” (which in some jurisdictions is referred to as “personal information”). This Supplemental Privacy Notice supplements and localizes the global Privacy Notice of the Church, which describes our data handling practices around the world and is available on request through www.ChurchofJesusChrist.org/DataPrivacy or at PrivacyNotice.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Responsible Organization

The Church acts through a legal entity established in the country where you live to be the responsible organization/data controller for your personal data. Our global data privacy office may be contacted through www.ChurchofJesusChrist.org/DataPrivacy and is located at 50 East North Temple Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150, USA.

Data Processing for Missionary Activity

Missionaries and members of the Church share their understanding and testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the scriptures, and especially the Book of Mormon with friends, neighbors, coworkers, and other interested persons. In addition, interested persons visit the Church’s websites or respond to product offers and talk with our missionaries online. Please consult our global Privacy Notice for information about how data is collected automatically when you visit the Church’s websites and how it is used to provide services to you.

We only collect, use and disclose your information in accordance with or as authorized by applicable local law. When someone expresses an interest in the Church and establishes contact with us, missionaries or other Church representatives will process additional personal data for missionary and other ecclesiastical purposes. We do this to be able to respond to your requests, to provide information and services, to pursue legitimate interests, and to meet legal obligations or requirements.  Such processing extends to the following categories of personal data if the individual chooses to voluntarily provide it:

Contact and personal information

  • First and last name
  • Street address (including country of residence)
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Age range
  • Gender
  • Social profile names
  • Preferred language
  • How contact was initiated (referral, street contacting, self-referred, and so forth)
  • Status in relation to the Church (for example, member or not member)
  • General information about the person’s background and Church-related interests
  • If a person chooses to stop engaging with missionaries, the reason why (for example, no longer interested)

Information about missionary meetings and invitations

  • Preferred method for meeting (for example, in person or online)
  • Date, time, and location of meetings
  • Principles taught (for example, “God is our loving Heavenly Father”)
  • Invitations extended (for example, “Read from the Book of Mormon”)

Missionaries or other Church representatives use the information to contact individuals, teach the principles of our faith, and extend and follow up on invitations that will help persons gain a testimony of the truthfulness of what the missionaries have taught. Missionaries, their leaders, and other local leaders of the Church use the following information collected by missionaries to support and befriend such persons in attending Church meetings:

  • Attendance at Church meetings
  • Date the missionaries last visited
  • Dates of upcoming visits
  • Which principles the missionaries have taught
  • Which invitations the missionaries have extended, and progress on the same

We also use the information to determine which further information about the Church, such as publications or other resources, may be of interest.

Data Transfers

Many Church entities and third-party service providers are located in the United States. Your personal information may be transferred to, or accessed or stored in the United States by, those parties. Data located in the United States may be accessible to local law enforcement, courts, and national security authorities.  To ensure an adequate level of protection of your personal data with respect to affiliated and unaffiliated service providers, we enter into agreements that contractually require such providers to comply with applicable data privacy laws.  Where required under local data privacy laws, you can ask for a copy of such appropriate safeguards by contacting us as specified under “Effective Date and Changes” later in this document.

Data Retention

We retain personal data collected under this Supplemental Privacy Notice generally for a period of two years, unless the individual continues to affirm interest, joins our Church, or requests deletion/erasure.

Requests and Inquiries

Subject to certain conditions and limitations set forth in applicable laws, if required by your local law, individuals may:

  1. Inquire whether and what kind of personal data we hold and how it is processed.
  2. Access or request copies of personal data that we process.
  3. Request the correction or supplementation of personal data that is inaccurate, incomplete, or out-of-date in light of the purposes underlying the processing.
  4. Request the erasure of personal data that is no longer necessary for the purposes underlying the processing; is processed based on withdrawn consent; is processed for legitimate interests that, in the context of your objection, do not prove to be compelling; or is processed in noncompliance with applicable legal requirements.
  5. Lodge a complaint with the competent local data protection/privacy regulator.

Effective Date and Changes
