Thomas L. Kane, a defender of women’s rights and crusader for the abolition of slavery, became the most ardent defender of Mormons' religious liberty. Though not a Mormon, Kane became a great friend to Brigham Young. His intervention during the Utah War of 1857-58 prevented a potentially bloody conflict.
