We Believe in Doing Good to All Men: Service.

On May 29, 2010, Pacaya, an active volcano, erupted, covering Guatemala City with ash and volcanic debris. Two days later, Tropical Storm Agatha buried parts of the city under three feet of water.

With their community in shambles, LDS youth came to the rescue.

It was all muddy up to here. We could not stand here because we would sink in the mud. Follow me.

The sidewalk over there was broken by a tractor so we decided to clean this place before it was completely destroyed. That definitely helped the neighbors. This stream is small right now, but during the storm it flooded. It brought rocks, sticks, and mud. This was a terrible situation for all these people. Because of the rain, most of them lost everything-- the few possessions they had. Some lost children taken by the current. I felt sad seeing people with so little having to go through this. Helping them is great.

God is always with them. We went together to clean the flooded streets. The streets were full of mud and debris. We took shovels and wheelbarrows and helped those in need. They were truly in a very bad condition. They were working there and cleaned this corner and continued this way. They helped in the village. We saw them helping so much. We saw people that were in great need. We had a great desire to help and were able to do it. We also thought about the deeds of our Lord Jesus Christ. I had no testimony, but my testimony of service has grown so much. I now think more often about what I can do for others. I have felt that when I serve others, I feel a different spirit. I feel thankful to my Heavenly Father for the opportunity He gives me to be an instrument for Him. Since we are His hands, we need to serve. We come and truly do what the Lord expects us to do. If we don't serve others, we can't claim to be believers. Serving is not doing things for others to see, but we do the things that our Heavenly Father requires from us in order to help our brothers and sisters.
