Barbara and I are very appreciative of this opportunity to come to Logan and participate in a special day of remembrance of the life and the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith. On February 13, Elder M. Russell Ballard addressed an audience at the Joseph Smith Memorial Fireside in Logan, Utah. He traced what he called a tapestry of leadership in faith through the lineage of the Prophet Joseph. I want to explain to you students primarily that our Heavenly Father had His eye on the Joseph Smith family from the beginning of time up to 1820. When we hear the name Joseph, we see God's hand weaving together a tapestry of prophets and dispensations, preparing the world time after time for the restoration of the gospel after periods of apostasy. This tapestry of leadership and faith leads us to the first Joseph, who was the firstborn of Jacob and Rachel. This Joseph was filled with integrity, power, and strength. As well as Joseph of Egypt, Elder Ballard continued by discussing other significant Josephs throughout scriptural history, each of whom were foreordained by the Lord for His special purpose. Elder Ballard went on to remind us about the many other people who gave their lives for the right to worship God, people such as John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, Anne Askew, William Tyndale, and many others. My dear brothers and sisters, when you see the hand of God working from the very beginning to prepare for the restoration of the gospel through the tapestry of faith woven through generations of time, knowing what we know about the past history of faith and sacrifice through the generations of brave, courageous sons and daughters of God, my brothers and sisters, we are duty bound to learn all we can about the doctrine and gospel of Christ. We are bound by covenant to share what we know to be true at all times and all places.
