My name is Dora Nina Sucso. I live in the middle of the city. I have three children. Five years ago I had a stroke. I was unconscious for three months. The doctors told me I should have died. One reason I got sick is because I only used to eat rice, noodles, potatoes, chuno, meat, and sodas. Also, the vegetables sold at the market are from the [UNINTELLIGIBLE] River, where they're watered with contaminated water. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided to do a container garden project here in El Alto.

I never imagined we could grow fresh chard, cabbage, and vegetables. When we started the new container garden program, many people thought it was too hard. But the fact is they realized that it wasn't hard, and what motivated them the most was when they started harvesting their own vegetables.

Here is the cabbage that I got from my garden, the chard, celery, more broccoli.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helped us a lot to plant things in our small garden.

We eat the vegetables because they are really delicious, especially broccoli and spinach.

We don't have pesticides and everything is organic, all natural. Because the things we buy outside can make us sick. This was good for me. Now my health is better. Now my kids are stronger. What did you do in school yesterday, Lu? Well, yesterday we did a lot of work at school. They don't get sick. Before, they used to get colds, have a cough, diarrhea. They were very weak. Now nobody has gotten sick all year. If they got something, they got better really fast. They learn better in class, too. So for me these vegetables are very valuable. This garden helps me to be self-sufficient. I can even grow things in the winter.

The Church tries to improve the health of the families, especially the children.

We follow the teachings of Jesus Christ with all the work we are doing here. We simply want to do our best to teach others to be self-sufficient.

I'm the happiest woman in this world. I never thought about doing this. For me, this is my happiness and makes me want to live.
