The gift of vision is important. It is how we discern all we do. Children who are in school perceive their surroundings through their eyes. Vision is important for observation and communication.
There is only one ophthalmologist in this region of Peru and nearly 1 million people. Our equipment resources are tremendously inadequate.
We have great problems here with cataracts and glaucoma. [? Kim Dan ?] organized a project through the humanitarian department to help the people here with their vision. Specifically, we've joined up with the Ministry of Education and helping them to screen the children.
In my school, I used to sit in the back of the class. The teacher would write the homework on a blackboard and I couldn't see it.
Since Eduardo was little, he has had difficulty learning at school. He repeated fifth and sixth grade. I thought he had a problem retaining things in his mind.
When the teacher taught us how we were going to take the test, the first thing we had to do was show them the way the letter was pointing with our hand. Everything was blurry.
I needed to point my hand in the direction of the letter, this way and that way. I thought my hand should point up, and really I should've pointed it down.
The Church has donated pieces of equipment to help us fix cataracts and glaucoma. I am grateful for this donation. It is going to be a very important part of helping the people in this region and providing them with a better future.
When they put glasses on me, I could see everything. Things were not blurry and everything looked closer. I was proud of myself. And I was a happy kid.
I knew I was going to be better with these glasses.
Eduardo is going to be able to learn in class better. And [? get ?] [? along ?] better with his classmates. He is going to be more receptive to what he is taught by his professors.
I believe that from the day that he received his glasses, he has been in a different world, a world of happiness.
