[MUSIC PLAYING] [SPEAKING SPANISH] There are many children who are always undernourished, who have no breakfast, who have no lunch, and who barely have one single meal in the entire day. And that food is inadequate because sometimes it's nothing more than a bowl of soup or a bowl of broth, a flavored water and a piece of bread, and that's all. And with just one meal is how they live for many years. [SPEAKING SPANISH] It's so sad to be a mother and be so poor that you can't give them a meal, a portion of bread each day. You can't give it to them so easily.

LDS Charities, part of the welfare system of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is working to help many impoverished people in rural, third-world communities. They teach improved planting techniques, crop rotation, how to raise small animals, how to achieve a balanced daily diet, as well as personal hygiene and proper food preparation methods. The result is nutritional self-reliance, effectively breaking the cycle of hunger.

[SPEAKING SPANISH] Here among the children, we have also been able to see that they previously were lacking in certain vitamins. But by means of the garden, through the teachings that we have had from the Church program, it has helped us to have better nutrition and better health for our children, as well as for ourselves.

[SPEAKING SPANISH] When they taught us, we learned. And that was a great help for us so that we could feel the joy, the love it gave us for us to become strong. And that help was a big advantage for us as a family. And we are very thankful, because they have taught us a lot so that we can be healthier and have a better life here.

[SPEAKING SPANISH] I love this job because I know that God brought me here. And I found the opportunity to be able to serve these people and teach them how to produce food.

And now, when we run into these families, when they have now finished their process, we give a hearty greeting. We have become friends.

And I have the satisfaction that I have been able to help them to lead a better life. [MUSIC PLAYING
