It's strange how things can have an impact on your life. Simple things, like a glass jar. When I was a young man, I had the opportunity of going away to college. I'd never been away from home before, and school was much harder than I expected. And together they form what basic acid? Mr. Burton.

I think I've-- I think I've got it right here. Mr. Thomas, could you help Mr. Burton with his question? Carbolic acid.

And both of those sums together give you the answer. Doesn't that make sense? No, it doesn't make sense anymore.

Nothing makes sense anymore.

I became very frustrated. I thought that the best thing for me to do would be to go back home and farm with my father.

And then, I saw something that stopped me.

And I remembered the first time I saw this jar.

You all know how much your mother and I would like to see you go to college. It's something that neither one of us had an opportunity to do. But we don't have money for that, do we? We don't now, but we could have. Depends on how much we can work together as a family. If each of us took the extra money we earn and put it in this jar, we could do it. Since John's the oldest, we need to start saving for him first.

We all agree?

Mrs. Peterson gave me a tip today. I think I'm going to save for my new baseball mitt.

That's great, Sam. What about John's jar? What? I have to put my tips in, too? Well, no one's going to force you. We did agree.

You better get straight A's.

Give it a try now.

I feel like there's a lot of blousiness to the back. Yes, you're right.

Where'd this money come from? I thought we emptied this. Mrs. Peterson gave me a tip today. I wanted you to have it.

Better get going.

Study hard. Bye, son.

A simple jar. That's what helped me decide to stay. I put it where it would remind me of all the sacrifices my family had made for me.

Whenever I thought that I couldn't take school anymore, I would take down the jar and remember.
