[MUSIC PLAYING] I started realizing that I was in the greatest shape of my life. He came in as he saw the successes he was experiencing. Obviously he started to raise the goals, and as a result, his results started reflecting the heightened goals. He was kind of a definition of a scholar athlete. More than I ever want to be good at athletics, before even I started running, I'd always dreamed of going on a mission. Before you go you have to have made up your mind of why you're doing that. I think my biggest fear was that I was just going to gain a lot of weight. I mean, I had heard horror stories from some of the other guys on the team that had gone on their missions, that they weren't able to regain their top form. I put on about 30 pounds in the first six months or so of my mission. And there were times during that first while where I just convinced myself, "Well, I'll probably never compete at a collegiate level again or ever be able to wear a BYU uniform." Even if I wasn't able to a compete or be as good as I was before, it would still be worth it for me. I didn't need any type of physical compensation when I returned for it to be worth it. Post mission, he had put on a little weight. I remember running behind him and I was going mmm, may take a while to get him back in shape. Slowly things are coming back. And I realized before long that I was able to get back to where I was before. Having the faith that you are going to go out to do some service for two years and as a result of that there is going to be blessings that come into your life, and not necessarily all physical blessings. They're not all necessarily going to come back and get college records as a result of that. But they'll be blessings that are even greater by having those two years to go off and serve the Lord. After cross country nationals, he actually broke the news to me that I'd been invited to participate in the Millrose Games. The intent of inviting me was to try and make an attempt at the collegiate record for the mile. [ANNOUNCER] Going to New York, it was hard to ignore the hype that surrounds that meet or the elite athletes that were participating. [ANNOUNCER I knew that I had one goal in mind and that was to break the collegiate record. Early on in the race I was not in a good position. Things opened up in the race a little bit; I was able to move up into the top few runners with the leaders and cross the line. And then I saw the official time come up on the board and that I had broken the record and accomplished my goal. Currently he's one of the best college runners that's ever come through. The fact that he set that college record is a testament to that. Some may say that Heavenly Father, He doesn't necessarily care about sports or athletics. But I do think He cares about us, and so He cares about the things that are important to us in our lives. And even since I've been home I feel like I have been able to constantly thank Him for the help that we received as a team, individually, and also ask Him that you can help to strengthen us.
