My beloved brothers and sisters, it is a joy to celebrate this historic day with you as we announce the publication of the Latter-day Saint edition of the Holy Bible in Portuguese. We honor the individuals who made it their life's work to translate the Holy Bible into Portuguese so many years ago, and those who have preserved and published editions of these translations since that time. We express our gratitude to the members who have diligently worked to prepare this Latter-day Saint edition that uses references, footnotes, and other study aids that will allow Portuguese-speaking Saints to drink deeply from the sacred words of our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Your Heavenly Father knows you. He loves you. He knows your name. He knows your joys, your sorrows, and your hopes. He has made these records available to you that they may be a source of comfort, that feeble knees will be strengthened and heavy heads and hands will be lifted. The scriptures are the ultimate guide to learning the gospel, a key to the understanding of our Father and our Savior Jesus Christ. Use the scriptures in your personal study and in Sunday class discussions, as you counsel together as leaders and families, and as you minister to your fellow brothers, sisters, neighbors, and friends. Build up those treasures found in the scriptures so that when the time comes (quote), "it shall be given you in the very hour" (close quote) that you find your need. The Holy Bible is a link to our brothers and sisters of other religions, a common ground of faith built upon the words of our Father, the writings of ancient prophets, and the enduring teachings and Atonement of our Savior and Redeemer. We invite you to gather around the scriptures. Gather your youth, even at an early age, so they may listen to the words of our loving Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ--that they may know Their voices, that they may know their Heavenly Father as He knows them. Within the scriptures, you will find endless examples and lessons of both earthly and eternal life. I remember the power and impact of the scriptures upon my life, even when I was a boy. I studied them with my parents and eventually on my own. Wherever you are on the path of eternal life, the scriptures are for you. They will give you great spiritual power. You'll be strengthened to resist the temptations of the world. You will continue to learn as the months and years go by. With this effort, your testimony will grow in breadth and in depth as the Holy Ghost confirms they are true. Your living testimony will expand as you study, pray, and ponder in the scriptures. For as the scriptures say (quote), "That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day" (close quote). Brothers and sisters, we love you. We encourage you to obtain your own copy of these precious scriptures and to use them in your personal and family study and in Church meetings and assignments. As you prayerfully learn and teach from the scriptures, your testimonies will grow and you will receive greater direction in your daily lives.
