One of the best experiences was teaching this workshop in a facility in Uganda. And we had just gotten to the golden minute, and we were talking about stimulating the baby, and if that isn't effective, then you begin positive pressure ventilation. And there was a knock on the door from the delivery room, and the midwife, who had slipped out to deliver her patient who had been laboring all night, said, "Come quick. The baby's not breathing." So we wiped off the bag and mask that we were doing in the practice. We went in to the baby who wasn't breathing after having airway cleared and being stimulated. And the facilitator resuscitated the baby with positive pressure ventilation, and the baby began to breathe. And that was a facility that hadn't had a mask that worked before we arrived there. So she literally made a difference in that baby's life. And I thought, "Surely nobody's had an experience this powerful." But then when we got back to Kampala, we discovered that almost everybody who had been out in facilities training that week had had something very similar happen to them. That was such a critical moment because the facilitator, who had been trained only a few days before, was able to take the lead. And in front of her colleagues, she really showed them what was possible. And for me that was such an empowering moment--not only for them, because they saw that they could achieve this, but it was also empowering for me because I knew that our education was working.
