We have been well behind on the sugar development this season, partly because of the high bunch count and partly because of the hot days we have had. When it gets too hot, the vines shut down and photosynthesis does not happen. Thus, no additional sugar is produced. I have asked certain stake and ward leaders recently to pray for the vineyard that our sugar will increase. The last sugar reading that I took last Monday showed 17.325 AV for the farm. We needed to have 21 percent by picking time. August 25 will be the last reading that I take for the southern half of the vineyard--Fresno, Fresno North, and Fresno West Stakes. That would mean almost 2 points per week until that time. Mostly at this time of year, 1 point per week is average, 1.5 points per week under ideal circumstances. And since we had over 100 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures all week, it did not look good. So yesterday I went into our Primary during singing time and asked those children to pray for the vineyard, that we needed God to speed up our sugar in the grapes. I know it may not be Church doctrine, but I personally believe that God puts the prayers of little children at the top of the list. But I do know it is doctrine that the prayer of faith "availeth much." And I know that those children have more faith than most adults. Their minds have not been polluted with doubt or logic or fears of men. I told Bishop Barrows last night that I had full faith in the prayers of those children. So this morning, I go out to do the testing at the same time of day, same marked bunches with yellow caution tape that I do every Monday morning from July to harvest. The AV reading was 19.225, at a time of year when a point to a point-and-a-half increase per week under good conditions--we got almost 2 points under extreme adverse conditions. So if we can get another 1.8 points by next Monday, we will be above 21 percent at picking time. So ask me if I believe in the faith and prayers of little children.
