This week in your Bible study, you may have learned about a man called Saul.
Saul was someone who treated followers of Christ badly.
And one day Jesus Christ appeared to him and told him that what he was doing was wrong.
And so Saul, he repented and he changed, and he decided to change his name to Paul because he felt like he was a very different person. And so I thought it would be really fun to draw a picture of a caterpillar and how a caterpillar can turn into a beautiful butterfly,
just like Saul turned into a very different person through the Savior called Paul. I'm really excited to draw this with you guys. Let's get going.
So let's start by drawing the caterpillar down at the bottom, and then we'll make the big, beautiful butterfly.
So to draw the caterpillar, I'm just going to start with a circle all the way over on the right side of my page.
And now to create our caterpillar, we're going to do a bunch of circles, and we can even go up and then kind of down.
But I’m not going to do full circles, I'm going to stop when I get to the other side of this circle.
You can just do a bunch of these and you can kind of change directions.
You can see how I'm going back down and back up. And if you need a pause at any time to get caught up, you can do that, too.
All right. So there's the body of my caterpillar,
and now we can put some antennas on it. So I’m going to go over here and I’m just going to do two antennas
coming up off the top of my caterpillar. And you could do straight lines with little dots, or you can just do like what I’ve done here, a little curve that goes up and down. And we can put some eyes on it.
I'm just going to do some little dot eyes, but you can do whatever types of eyes you like to do. And maybe put a cute little smile on the caterpillar right there, because he knows that he's going to be able to turn into a butterfly someday. Right? And now you can put some legs on this caterpillar.
And there we have it. And then after this,
we can color it and make it look however we like. So let's go on and let's do this big, beautiful butterfly that the caterpillar turns into.
So up here, up here in the middle of my page, I'm just going to draw a line and this is going to be the body of my butterfly. And if you want to make it a little thicker, you can.
So we have this nice, thick body right here. And then I want to put some antennas on this, too.
And I'm just going to do two little lines that go up in two different directions. And we can put some little dots up there if we want to.
And now we’re going to start working on the big, beautiful wings,
something that you would never see on a caterpillar.
So we're going to do just two big lines that kind of go up in the air on both sides. And I'm going to try to get them both as close to the same as I can. This is something you can't ever do perfectly, but it will still look beautiful.
And then we're going to do the bottom part of the wings, too.
And maybe they're a little bit smaller so they don't go quite out as far as these top ones. Or at least that's how I'm going to do it on my butterfly.
Maybe make that one a little bit bigger up on the top
You can always make it a little bit bigger if you want to.
And now we want to have these top wings, we want to come down
about half way because this will be the top wing. And then we're going to do like a smaller wing on the bottom.
So I’m going to do a curved line that comes
halfway down on one side, and then I’m going to do the same thing on the other side.
And now we can have these lines go back in towards the body,
and they don’t have to go all the way in but you can if you want to.
I’m just going to go that far in, and then I want to connect this one with a curved line
too, so it all comes back together and makes a big, beautiful butterfly.
So after you have this basic butterfly drawn, you can decorate this however you want.
You can use different colors, or you can draw some lines in here to make some patterns if you want to
first. I’m going to make a couple of patterns in mine.
And I can just do some easy, fun things.
You could do whatever you like in here.
Sometimes the outside tips of the wings are a different color than the inside. There's so many different beautiful colors of butterflies.
And maybe we could put some circles in here.
But you can make this your butterfly. And maybe you've seen butterflies around your house and maybe you want to make it look like one you've seen before.
But you can see how you can use all kinds of different shapes
and patterns to make your butterfly.
I'm really excited about this because I know everybody's butterfly is going to look very, very different from each butterfly,
there’s not going to be two butterflies that are the same.
So something fun that we can do right here is we can make this butterfly look like it's flapping its wings by giving it some movement lines. So to do that, we just draw some lines next to the wings that kind of follow the direction that the wing goes.
And this just kind of makes it look like it's moving or doing something, like it’s flying through the air so we can see all the pretty colors on the butterfly.
So I'm going to start by coloring the caterpillar and I'm going to take this orange color and I want to make some stripes on it.
And while we’re doing this,
we can think about how different this caterpillar is from the butterfly.
If you didn't know that a caterpillar turned into a butterfly, would you think that they were even the same thing?
And I think that's really interesting because that's just like
the man that we learned about in the Bible. His name was Saul,
but he changed so much through Jesus Christ that his name was changed to Paul, which is a very different name.
Just like this caterpillar and this butterfly are both very, very different.
But you can see that the butterfly, when we get it all done, is going to be much bigger and more beautiful.
Because as we follow the Savior and He teaches us the things that He wants us to know,
we can also become very different and we can become like a new creature,
or like this butterfly into something really beautiful that we possibly didn't even know that we could become. And I bet that's exactly how Paul or Saul felt.
All right. So maybe on the bottom of this caterpillar,
I'm going to color some purple down here on the bottom of this caterpillar.
And I am really excited to see which colors you choose.
And what color do you think we should do the head?
Maybe we could do a pretty pink color. That could be fun.
You can really pick whatever colors you want
because this caterpillar is still beautiful.
But wouldn’t it be so much nicer to be able to fly up into the sky? All right, so let’s start coloring this butterfly.
I think I'm going to just put a bunch of yellow up here.
Kind of fill this in.
And you can color yours whatever colors you like.
You can pick your favorite colors or just pick some combinations of colors that you think would look fun together and look really bright and beautiful. Maybe this yellow is nice because yellow can be a really, really bright color that can really shine.
And I think I'm going to do some of it orange to kind of maybe mix some of these colors together.
There's so many fun ways that you can color things that I've seen people do.
And so your picture does not have to look just like mine or anybody else's
because this is your butterfly. And every single piece of artwork is beautiful
because they’re all so different and unique and they all tell a story.
And one of the stories that we're trying to tell today is about how Saul
changed to become Paul
because he wanted to be like the Savior. And he really did.
He started to do all the things that he was commanded to do.
And maybe you found sometimes that when you read the scriptures,
it makes you want to be a better person, too, and it changes who you want to be.
And so we can see that as we do the things that are asked for us, maybe sometimes you’ve been in church and you’ve learned things and you've decided that you want to do things differently in your life.
Maybe you've decided you want to do kinder things for your family,
maybe give your mom more hugs.
And in that way, we change the same way that Paul did
because of the things that we learned about.
I really think blue is a fun color up against orange, it really pops out.
It's called a complementary color.
All right, So finish getting that colored in,
and then maybe you can think of some fun colors
for the rest of it.
I can put some beautiful pink dots up here. These can be so colorful, you could use all the colors in the rainbow if you wanted to.
You could just have a lot of fun with this.
So go crazy.
Maybe we put some green out here in the tips.
All right, so there's my finished butterfly.
I've got my caterpillar down here that's going to transform into this beautiful butterfly. I can't wait to see how you guys colored your butterflies. So here's my finished picture of a butterfly and a caterpillar. I'm excited to show you some that some other kids have made. Let's take a look at these. You can see that every single one of these drawings is different and they have very different colors. Your picture does not need to look like my picture or like anyone else’s, they’re all unique and beautiful.
I love how this one has a whole bunch of hearts in the air.
These hearts look like a whole bunch more butterflies where people have turned into these butterflies and decided to follow the Savior. And right here, I love this beautiful caterpillar here, you have these different sections of colors. These are really fun. And this big, beautiful red butterfly. Right here, this looks like a party butterfly. You’ve got all these
beautiful red spots on this yellow and right here. I love all these hearts,
Ii makes these patterns inside the wings and inside the caterpillar.
And all of these illustrate the story where we're talking about Saul turning into Paul.
And as these caterpillars change into butterflies, this represents how much we can change when we follow Jesus Christ. We can become kind instead of unkind. Or we might become peacemakers instead of fighting. But our Savior, He wants to change us and make us into better people.
I had a lot of fun drawing with you guys today. I'll see you next time. Bye.
