When upon the rising seas the angry billows roll

My Savior is the refuge and the harbor of my soul

For when the tempest rages; when night grows dark and chill

He comes to bid my fearful heart,

“Peace, peace, be still.” “Peace, peace, be still.”

When before a rising tide of pain or grief I flee

The Lord will hear my anguished cry and haste to rescue me

For He can calm the tempest according to His will

Or come and bid my fearful heart,

“Peace, peace, be still.”

He who made the rising storm can bid its fury fail

Or bear me up and give me strength to stand before the gale

I’ll wait upon his kindness and trust in Him until

He calms the wind or bids my heart,

“Peace, peace,

Peace, peace,

Peace, peace, be still.” Peace, peace, be still.” Peace, peace, be still.”

Hello, and welcome to the Church Music Festival, where you will hear new music created by the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

My name is Rachel, and tonight we’ll hear from the Utah Valley Institute Singers and local musicians near Temple Square. You can find all the music from tonight's concert and learn how to submit your own music on the Church music website.

Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoy the concert. But first, let's start with a prayer from my younger sister, Alice.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this day. Please bless for us to have a good time here,

and please bless for the singers to do a very good job and for all people watching and for all people

doing their best, please bless all of them.

And we say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen. Amen.

Sweet above all that is sweet,

The fruits of the gospel we taste.

Sweet are the Savior’s glorious gifts

And tender assurance of grace.

Sweet as the gift of peace,

White as a sanctified soul.

Pure as the Savior’s love,

Our joy, thru Christ’s mercy made whole.

White above all that is white,

The soul, bright as sun’s blazing beam.

White, tho once scarlet, bright and renewed,

When cleansed in the blood of the Lamb.

Sweet as the gift of peace,

White as a sanctified soul.

Pure as the Savior’s love,

Our joy, thru Christ’s mercy made whole.

Pure above all that is pure,

The pure love of Christ manifest

Purifies those who serve in his Name,

Enduring in faith to the last.

Sweet as the gift of peace,

White as a sanctified soul.

Pure as the Savior’s love,

Our joy, thru Christ’s mercy made whole.

Made whole.

What do you know about Jesus Christ?

Well, I know that He was born and He suffered in Gethsemane.

And He created this world that we live in. He created all the beautiful animals. I know that He performed lots of miracles. He raised the dead.

He healed the blind. He healed the lame.

Some other things I can’t remember.

He takes all my bad dreams away.

He sacrificed himself so that we can all live and die and go up to heaven with Him.

We can get resurrected like He did so then we could live again.

Tell me how Jesus helps you feel happy.

When I think of Him, I think of all the things He’s done for me.

He loves everybody, even people that make bad deeds.

Jesus loves me.

And my dad loves me, too.

He assures us that we will die and then come back and be resurrected.

He gave me my talents.

He gave me my life. He gave me activities to do.

He makes me feel really happy.

Once, I actually cried because I love Him so much.

So there’s a song called, “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus.”

So if you were trying to be like Jesus,

what are some things that you would do?

I sometimes just randomly unload the dishwasher.

Help others and be nice to others.

If somebody is hurt,

you can help them up. You could share the gospel.

You could be kind to others.

And if someone was lonely, you could say, “Hey, you want to play with me?”

He has taught us that we need to live in harmony.

It doesn’t matter if we are black or white, if we’re deaf or if we can hear, we always need to live in harmony with each other.

Tell me why you love Jesus.

I love Him because He’s very faithful and He does good works.

I love Him because He is a very kind person,

and He answers our prayers.

Because He can basically help you whenever you need help.

Thank you, Jesus

for the temple.

He’s white like the sun.

So it’s like He warms you up.

It’s just kinda special for me to have Him.

And I’m just waiting to see Him.

Jesus, the very thought of Thee with sweetness fills my breast,

But sweeter far thy face to see

and in thy presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame, nor can the mem’ry find,

A sweeter sound than thy blest name,

O Savior of mankind.

O hope of ev’ry contrite heart, O joy, joy of all the meek, To those who fall how kind, how good to those who seek.

Jesus, our only joy be thou, as thou our prize wilt be, Jesus be Thou our glory now, and through eternity.

Jesus, be Thou our glory now,

and through eternity. and through eternity.

There has never been a time like this.

The truth is spreading all across the earth.

So many souls are thirsting for His gift.

And now we stand to join Him in the work.

We have heard the words of a prophet of the Lord,

and we can testify that nothing matters more.

We are chosen for these final days, a promise from within.

Ready now to take our place and gather all to Him.

Born to raise our voices high, with hearts prepared to sacrifice.

Called upon to be a light, a light to the world.

The Spirit speaks with power to our hearts.

Reminding us what we were born to do.

Opening our eyes to who we are.

And giving us a witness to the truth.

We have heard the words of a prophet of the Lord,

And we can testify that nothing matters more.

We are chosen for these final days,

a promise from within.

Ready now to take our place and gather all to Him.

Born to raise our voices high, with hearts prepared to sacrifice.

Called upon to be a light, a light to the world.

As the hope of Israel we’ll profess our faith,

And shine our light, whatever it takes.

We are chosen for these final days, a promise from within.

Ready now to take our place and gather all to Him.

Born to raise our voices high, with hearts prepared to sacrifice.

Called upon to be a light,

a light to the world.

Precious Savior, dear Redeemer, Thy sweet message now impart.

May thy Spirit, pure and fervid, Enter ev’ry timid heart;

Carry there the swift conviction, Turning back the sinful tide.

Precious Savior, dear Redeemer, May each soul in thee abide.

Precious Savior, dear Redeemer, We are weak but Thou art strong;

In thy infinite compassion, Stay the tide of sin and wrong.

Keep thy loving arms around us; Keep us in the narrow way.

Precious Savior, dear Redeemer, let us never from Thee stray.

Precious Savior, dear Redeemer, Thou wilt bind the broken heart.

Let not sorrow overwhelm us; Dry the bitter tears that start.

Curb the winds and calm the billows; Bid the angry tempest cease.

Precious Savior, dear Redeemer, Grant us everlasting peace.

Precious Savior, Dear Redeemer,

Grant us everlasting peace. everlasting peace.

If someone came to you and said, “Who is Joseph Smith?” What would you say?

Joseph Smith was, um, was one of our prophets.

When he was a little boy. He had a sore on his leg and he was faithful that it would be OK and the doctor cut out that bad piece of bone and he was OK.

Well, he stood up to bullies

and stood up to mean fighters. He was the first prophet in nowadays. He found the gold plates.

He translated the gold plates into the Book of Mormon.

They let people know about it,

know about Jesus. If they have,

if they haven’t read it yet, they would let them read it, kind of.

And he really actually is the person who restored the Church. He’s the real person who restored the Church.

When you talk about Joseph Smith, many times you talk about Joseph Smith and the First Vision.

Tell me about that.

He had a vision.

He was in like this place called . . . my family calls it “a pleasant grove.”

He was praying to Heavenly Father to ask Them a question.

The question was, “What church should I join?”

He read a scripture and it said to pray.

He prays to know which—what church was right, and then . . . Satan came and

made him so he couldn’t pray.

When he kneels down and he prays, he can see God and Jesus.

Heavenly Father and Jesus came down and made Satan go away. Then Heavenly Father pointed to His Son, and then He says, “This is my Beloved Son, hear Him.”

Joseph Smith was like, “What church should I go to?” And He’s like, “None.”

And he had to create a church for everyone to go to.

(Tenor/Bass) Oh, how lovely was the morning!

Bees were humming, sweet birds singing, music ringing through the grove,

When within the shady woodland, Joseph sought the God of love,

When within the shady woodland,

Joseph sought the God of love.

(Soprano/Alto) Humbly kneeling, sweet appealing ’Twas the boy’s first uttered prayer When the pow’rs of sin assailing filled his soul with deep despair;

But undaunted, still he trusted in his Heavenly Father’s care,

But undaunted, still he trusted But undaunted, still he trusted in his Heavenly Father’s care. in his Heavenly Father’s care.

Suddenly a light descended, brighter far than noonday sun, And a shining, glorious pillar o’er him fell, around him shone,

While appeared two heavenly beings

God the Father and the Son,

While appeared two heavenly beings God the Father and the Son. God the Father and the Son.

(MEN) “Joseph, this is my Beloved; Hear him!”

(WOMEN) Oh, how sweet the word!

Joseph’s humble prayer was answered, and he listened to the Lord. Oh what rapture filled his bosom, for he saw the living God, Oh what rapture filled his bosom, for he saw___ for he saw___ the living God. the living God. the living God.

In the stillness of my soul,

Humbly on my knees,

I dedicate my life to serve; Accept my offering.

Send me with a willing heart, Bless me with Your grace.

Touch my soul that I may love Purely all my days

In the Savior’s way.

May I serve Your precious ones And guide them to the fold.

Faithful ’til my work is done, then bring me safely home.

Place my feet along the path Of virtue where He stood.

Use my hands to bless and heal

And touch each life for good.

As the Savior would.

May I serve Your precious ones And guide them to the fold.

Faithful ’til my work is done,

Then bring me safely home.

Keep the ones whom I have loved In your watchful care.

I speak the pleadings of my heart And trust that You will hear

A missionary’s prayer. A missionary’s prayer.

So who taught you to pray?

My mom and dad.

Well, my mother and my father and my sister.

Probably my parents. Jesus.

I'm pretty sure it's just everyone praying around me.

So then I learned how to pray that way. I don’t know.

I don’t know. My dad when I was a baby.

My dad and mom.

I think it was my mom and dad, but other than that, I think it was me.

How do you pray?

We close our eyes, we bow our head, we . . . wait, what?

I pray by folding my arms. I fold my arms. Then you could bow your head, you could kneel down, sit... and even when you’re driving, you can pray.

Just try to think of what I need and what I need...

the answers and stuff.

I pray when I am grateful for things.

OK, we fold our arms, we bow our head, we close our eyes when prayer is said.

So when you pray and you’re thanking Heavenly Father for things, what are some of the things that you thank Him for?

Well, I thank Him for my house. I thank Him for my family.

Like the earth and His blessings and the gospel.

For family and for missionaries.

And, like, for my house so I can stay warm.

For my grandparents and great grandparents.

I thank Him for the pioneers.

All my clothes, and my house, and that

we have money. That I have a family and that I have a body.

We can go to school and that we have a home. That I have good friends and I have my awesome toys.

Can you tell me a story about a time when your prayers were answered?

Just when I have lost random things, I’d, all of a sudden, just pray for them. And then He helped me know where to find it.

Sometimes

you barely even notice them. You’re, like, “Wait a second, did that happen?”

Um, like when my mom lost her phone, I mean, watch. And we prayed and we found it, and it was just out in the car.

Once my mom had a very bad headache. So I prayed for her, and when I got back, she was feeling all better.

One time my family prayed for rain

and after that day, it actually rained.

The Lord my pasture will prepare

and feed me with a shepherd’s care

His presence will my want supply and guard me with a watchful eye.

My noonday walks He will attend

And all my silent midnight hours defend. And all my silent midnight hours defend.

When in the sultry glebe I faint,

Or on the thirsty mountain pant,

To fertile fields and dewy meads

My weary wand’ring steps He leads,

Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,

Amid the cooling verdant landscape flow. Amid the cooling verdant landscape flow.

The Lord my pasture will prepare. The Lord my pasture will prepare.

Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, See him dying on the tree!

’Tis the Christ by man rejected; Ye, my soul, ’tis he, ’tis he!

’Tis the long expected Prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;

By his Son God now has spoken; ’Tis the true and faithful Word.

Tell me, ye who hear him groaning, Was there ever grief like His?

Friends through fear His cause disowning, Foes insulting his distress;

Many hands were raised to wound Him, None would interpose to save;

But the deepest stroke that pierced Him Was the stroke that Justice gave.

Ye who think of sin but lightly Nor suppose the evil great

Here may view its nature rightly. Here its guilt may estimate.

Mark the Sacrifice appointed,

See who bears the awful load;

’Tis the word, the Lord’s Anointed

Son of Man and Son of God.

Here we have a firm foundation, Here the refuge of the lost;

Christ the Rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast.

Lamb of God for sinners wounded,

Sacrifice to cancel guilt!

None shall ever be confounded who on Him their hope have built. who on Him their hope have built.

So, what do you do when you’re mad or upset?

Sometimes I, like, when I don’t want to go someplace,

I kind of like whine and scream.

Sometimes I yell, but sometimes I also take a deep breath

and try to not get mad at

other people.

Every single time I get mad I try to stop myself from blurting out and being mean.

And then I’m like, “Why did I do that?”

Sometimes I pray. I just think, I don’t want to be angry right now, but I just need to make sure that Satan doesn’t

like, take control of me.

So what are some things that make you happy?

Well, here’s a certain thing that really makes me happy: when someone makes me laugh, I’m like . . . Treats! Watching TV, eating candy, and playing with my friends.

But my mommy and I don’t let me have a lots of treats.

Seeing a dog. When I get presents. Reading and playing.

My friends and family. The stars at night. And Jesus makes me really, really happy.

And the Church also makes me very happy.

How can thinking about Jesus help you when you're having a bad day? Well, when I’m feeling sad, um, He, like, comforts me a lot.

It will make us know that He is here for us.

Jesus.

When you when you feel sad, you say prayer and He helps you.

He helps us to know that we can always change a bad day.

It makes me happy because I can feel the Holy Ghost.

Just thinking about how happy He is

and people treating Him bad, like when He got crucified, people were treating Him badly, and He still forgave them.

So, is there a Primary song that you like to sing that makes you happy?

Let me think of what it’s called again.

Joseph Smith’s First Prayer, I Love to See the Temple.

I Belong to the Church of Jesus Christ, because I like how it has a happy tune.

On a Golden Springtime.

I Am a Child of God.

You Are My Sunshine. That’s all.

Yeah, great.

I really like, I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus. That one.

I want to

see the temple. I’m going there some day.

I am a child of God, and He has sent me here.

So He went willingly

to Gethsemane.

I like it because it reminds me of how much

I want to be like Jesus.

Abide with me; ’tis eventide. The day is past and gone;

The shadows of the evening fall; The night is coming on.

Within my heart a welcome guest, within my home abide.

O Savior stay this night with me; Behold ’tis eventide.

O Savior stay this night with me; Behold ’tis eventide.

Abide with me; ’tis eventide. Thy walk today with me

Has made my heart within me burn, as I communed with Thee.

Thy earnest words have filled my soul and kept me near Thy side.

O Savior, stay this night with me; Behold ’tis eventide.

O Savior, stay this night with me; Behold ’tis eventide.

Abide with me; ’tis eventide. And lone will be the night

If I cannot commune with Thee, nor find in Thee my light.

The darkness of the world, I fear, would in my home abide.

O Savior, stay this night with me;

Behold ’tis eventide.

O Savior, stay this night with me; O Savior, stay this night with me; Behold ’tis eventide. Behold ’tis eventide.

Guide us, O thou great Jehovah, guide us to the promised land

We are weak, but thou art able; hold us with thy pow’rful hand. Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, feed us til the Savior comes.

Feed us til the Savior comes.

Open, Jesus, Zion’s fountains; let her richest blessings come.

Let the fiery, cloudy pillar guard us to this holy home.

Great Redeemer, Great Redeemer, bring, oh bring the welcome day.

Bring, O bring the welcome day.

When the earth begins to tremble, bid our fearful thoughts be still;

When Thy judgements spread destruction, Keep us safe on Zion’s hill.

Singing praises, singing praises, Songs of glory unto Thee,

Songs of glory unto Thee. Songs of glory unto Thee.

Guide us, O thou treat Jehovah

Feed us til the Savior comes. Feed us til the Savior comes.

Can you tell me about the birth of Jesus Christ?

So Mary was engaged to Joseph, but they weren't married yet,

and then an angel visited Mary.

He told her that she was going to have a baby and she was to name the baby Jesus. And He would do many great things and be the Son of God. So they got married, but then a couple of days later,

they had to pay their taxes and go to Bethlehem.

They knocked on all the doors, but everything was full.

A man told them to go to a stable.

There they had baby Jesus and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger. When He was born,

a star appeared and wisemen and shepherds came to celebrate

and worship Him because they knew He was their Lord.

So why do we celebrate Christmas?

I know that we celebrate Jesus. To celebrate His birthday. We just use Christmas to celebrate,

because that’s when most people think that He was born,

but He was really born at Easter time. Because Jesus means . . .

Santa gives us presents.

Because we celebrate Jesus.

Because it was His birth and

we can be glad because He was born and the gift of . . . the gift of Jesus coming to the earth.

So how do you keep your focus on Jesus at Christmas time?

Every Christmas Eve, we all do a family nativity. We have these little papers, these little slivers of papers

that we write what we’re thankful for.

I know that I kept a song in my head that was like all about Jesus and Christmas.

Hosanna. We sing it every Christmas.

What does your family do that’s fun at Christmas time?

Or, tell me about a fun Christmas memory?

I think it was, I think the first time I used my new snow shovel.

Waiting for the morning to come so I could go downstairs and see all of my presents!

I just open presents that are mine.

We have this porch in the backyard and we, when the snow is deep, we usually go out there and jump off.

A super fun snowball fight.

Eating good food.

I saw Santa, the real Santa.

And we make gingerbread houses.

We always go caroling. It’s one of our favorite things to do at Christmas time.

Jesus Christ was born in a town called Bethlehem,

Born to save us all from death and sin.

I heard the bells on Christmas day

Their old familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet the words repeat

Of peace of earth, good will to men.

I thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled along th’unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Then in despair I bowed my head: “There is no peace on earth,” I said,

“For hate is strong, and mocks the song

Of peace on earth, Good will to men.”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men.”

’Til, ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved

from night to day A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth, good will to men.

A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth,

good will

to men.

To men. To men.

A new star rising,

The heavens lighting

As Father sends His Holy Son.

Look to the heavens, Come see the wonders!

Watching for the day when He will come.

Hosanna in the highest

Messiah comes to Earth!

Hosanna, Holy Baby,

Proclaim His wondrous birth.

Thru mists of darkness, In storms and tempest, As ancient prophecies foretold.

Look to the heavens, Come to the temple,

Watching for the day when He will come.

Hosanna in the highest,

Messiah from above!

Hosanna blessed Savior, Hear Him, and feel His love.

The Light of the World,

The Hope of all creation.

Redeemer and Lord, He has come, He will come, I will watch for the day

He comes!

Steadfast and faithful,

I will be ready,

I’ll treasure up His holy word.

Thru signs and wonders, I’ll not be troubled,

Watching for the day when He will come!

Hosanna in the highest,

Messiah comes again! Hosanna, Hallelujah, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Light and Hope of the World!

He comes again!

So I’m watching for the day

when He will come!

Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for His bed:

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all,

And His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall;

With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy.

Jesus is our childhood’s pattern; day by day like us He grew;

He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew;

And He feeleth for our sadness,

and He shareth in our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see Him, though His own redeeming love;

For that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above. And He leads His children on to the place where He is gone. where He is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, But in heaven we shall see Him, set at God’s right hand on high;

When the stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around. all in white shall wait around.

Amen. Amen. Amen.

I

know that with Him all things are possible.

I know that He made the earth and that He made all of us

and that He came here to earth and He atoned for our sins.

I love Jesus. I’m grateful for Jesus and all of the wonderful things that He’s done for us. He makes me feel happy and safe.

I love that everyone

has chances to have the Holy Ghost in their bodies.

Some people shut it all out and take their chances away,

and some people use their chances

and get better and better at listening.

If you are struggling with something,

you can think of Jesus Christ.

And you can also pray to Him and do something you like to do.

He’s so special and He helped defeat evil and He’s just a wonderful person.

Oh, I feel His love all the time. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Think of that joyful time before the world began,

Raising our voices, praising Heav’nly Father’s plan.

Jesus, our Brother chose to bear the sins of Man!

This is the Hope He’s bringing,

Hear all the voices singing praises to God and Son of Man!

Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria!

In Excelsis Deo! Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria!

Glory to God in the Highest, glory to His Son!

glory to His Son!

Gloria! Sing Gloria!, Sing Gloria

in Excelsis Deo! Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria! in Excelsis Deo! Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria!

This is a day of gladness, let our hearts rejoice!

Jesus has offered His atoning sacrifice,

Giving us hope that we can live with God again.

This is the Hope He’s bringing, Hear all the voices singing

praises to God and Son of Man!

Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria!

In Excelsis Deo! Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria! Glory to God in the Highest, glory to His Son! Bringing salvation to all men, Gloria! Gloria! Sing Gloria!, Sing Gloria in Excelsis Deo! Gloria! Sing Gloria! Sing Gloria! Gloria! Gloria! Gloria! Gloria! Gloria! Gloria!
