Fasting Prayer

We fast and pray to find God’s grace,
To know His will, and seek His face,
For Christ, by whom all things were made,
Himself has fasted and has prayed.
Alone and fasting Moses say
The loving God Who gave the law;
And to Elijah, fasting came
The steeds and chariots of the flame
So Daniel gained prophetic sight,
Delivered from the lions’ might;
And John, the bridegroom’s friend, became
The herald of the Savior’s Name.
Oh, grant us, Lord, like them to be
Found ever pressing near to Thee;
Our souls unbound by worldly care
Through earnest humble fasting prayer.
