I Take the Bread (Perry)

I Take the Bread (Perry)

Music for Choirs, Submitted Music (1992-1997)

I take the bread, I drink the water clear

The emblems of that sacrifice so dear.

The worthy Lamb appointed to atone,

He trod the wine press of God’s wrath alone.

Though innocent, sin’s penalty was borne,

Though Lord of all, He died as one forlorn.

For Eden’s fall, another garden’s gloom,

A brutal cross, a barren, borrowed tomb.

I take the bread, I drink the water clear,

Reflecting on the sacred name I hear.

My pains He knew, my wretched wrongs He bore,

Because of him, my guilt is guilt no more.

So shall I live, For Him who, for me, died,

His laws and every covenant abide.

Then shall His Spirit always be with me,

My strength, my guide, unto eternity.
