If We Knew

If we knew the cares that trouble Faithful Saints along the way,
If we knew the piercing heartaches, Causing blunders and dismay,
Would we, then, show swift impatience, Spreading rumors with disdain,
Casting on their life a shadow, Introducing further strain?
If we knew the hopeless wand’ring Of les actives, long estranged,
Would we leave them in confusion, Years on end, to stay unchanged?
O, the Master yearns to save them From a course with future grim,
And He calls us to reclaim them—Precious souls they are to Him!
If we knew the silent story. Quiv’ring through the heart of pain,
Would our conscience dare to doom them Back to haunts of guilt again?
Life has many tangled crossings, And to stumble leads to woe.
Still, the cheeks tear-washed seem whitest—Christ’s Atonement makes them so!
Let us show sincere compassion For the wounds in others’ lives,
And with love to erring people Cherish good that still survives.
So that when our life has ended, And we face our God again,
We may say, “Dear Father, judge us As we judged our fellowmen.”
