New College Presidents

Three of the Church’s institutions of higher education will operate under new leadership beginning this summer.

Dr. Dallin H. Oaks, 38, professor of law at the University of Chicago, has been named president of Brigham Young University. He succeeds President Ernest L. Wilkinson who announced his resignation in March. Dr. Wilkinson will remain at BYU to assist in the organization of a law school.

Dr. Stephen L. Brower, president of the Colombia-Venezuela Mission and former professor of sociology at Utah State University, will head the Church College of Hawaii at Laie. He replaces President Owen J. Cook who is returning to public school administration.

As previously announced (see May Ensign, p. 40), Dr. Henry B. Eyring, 37, associate professor in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, will replace President John L. Clarke at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. President Clarke has been called to serve as president of the New England States Mission.

Dr. Oaks, who has been at the University of Chicago since 1961, was the associate dean and then acting dean in 1962–63. During the past year he has taught only part-time while serving as executive director of the American Bar Foundation.

A native of Provo and graduate of Brigham Young University in 1954, Dr. Oaks received the doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Chicago Law School in 1957. He is author or co-author of four books and has written dozens of journal and magazine articles.

He served as second counselor in the Chicago South Stake presidency from 1963 to 1970, and since September 1970 has been first counselor in that presidency.

Dr. Brower, 48, was on the faculty at Utah State University from 1949 until 1967. During the 1967–68 school year he was professor of sociology at the University of Nebraska. His mission call came in 1968.

A native of Blackfoot, Idaho, with a Ph.D. in rural sociology in 1961 from Cornell University, Dr. Brower is the author of a number of published scientific papers dealing with executive training and adult education.

Dr. Brower is an associate of the Institute of Applied Behavioral Science and has been a member of the national advisory committee of the National Extension Training in Community Resource Development. He was also the first chairman of the Utah State Indian Affairs Commission.

Dr. Eyring, the new president at Ricks, has a master’s and doctor’s degree in business from Harvard University. He is a bishop of the Stanford University student ward.
