“This photograph of a Utah valley symbolizes for me some basic truths about our mortal experience here in the latter days. This striking scene suggests that the world is filled with much spiritual darkness, with sin and sorrow and tribulation. Yet, in this darkness, there is light! I love the way the light, symbolizing the powers of heaven, falls upon the mountains and highlights the snow, representing purity—the strength and greatness of the Lord’s people.

As I contemplate the scene, I find my attention drawn first to the light and am reminded that even if the area of light is small, the light still dominates the darkness. Remembering these truths, I more deeply recommit myself to the power of the light in my life and understand better the nature of mortal life. Darkness and light, strength and weakness, all compete—but light and purity prevail. I take strength from the peaceful feeling I have that heaven does give guidance and safety to those in the light, to all who are faithful servants in the mountain of the Lord’s house, his church.”
