LDS Women Honored in U.S. Young Mother, Mother of Year Ranks

A Latter-day Saint from Walla Walla, Washington, was selected as 1985 National Young Mother for the United States, and twenty-one other LDS women represented their states in the nationwide Young Mother and Mother of the Year judging.

Suzanne Webb Ballard, a member of the Walla Walla Third Ward, Walla Walla Washington Stake, was named National Young Mother at the American Mothers, Inc., conference April 21 in New York City. She is her ward’s Young Women president and has previously served as a Sunday School teacher and stake Relief Society board member. She is also active in her children’s schools.

Seventeen of the women representing their states as 1985 Young Mother were LDS. They included: Linda E. Beckett, Escondido Second Ward, Escondido California Stake; Bethany R. Brinton, Manhattan Second Ward, New York New York Stake; Susan S. Davis, Kimball Ward, South Salt Lake Stake; Kathryn K. “KK” Ellis, Olde Oaks Ward, Houston Texas North Stake; Judy H. Error, Bloomfield Hills Ward, Bloomfield Hills Michigan Stake; Kathleen Gill, Anchorage Sixth Ward, Anchorage Alaska Stake; and Dixie Kennington, Fairview Ward, Afton Wyoming Stake.

Others were: Brenda S. Manning, Dover Ward, Wilmington Delaware Stake; Lynette Moss, North Broward Ward, Fort Lauderdale Florida Stake; Lyn Nair, Kensington Ward, Washington D.C. Stake; Patricia Ann C. Oliver, Gaithersburg Maryland Ward, Washington D.C. Stake; Janet W. Seeley, Independence Second Ward, Independence Missouri Stake; Marilyn M. Short, Oklahoma City Fifth Ward, Oklahoma City Oklahoma Stake; Jo Ann Sparrow, Weston Second Ward, Preston Idaho South Stake; Deanne A. Taylor, Lehi Second Ward, Mesa Arizona Lehi Stake; and Barbara A. Winkel, Rock Creek Ward, Cedar Mill Oregon Stake.

Four LDS women represented their states as Mother of the Year in the 1985 judging. They are Marion Cox Arave, a member of the Hooper Fifth Ward, Hooper Utah Stake; Carolyn Blain Hafen, a member of the Walla Walla Third Ward, Walla Walla Washington Stake; Ruby Robbins Lesser, a member of the Medina Ward, Akron Ohio Stake; and Alice Maxine Coley Miller, a member of the Brooklyn First Ward, New York New York Stake.
