General Conference Music
This summary of conference music is provided for choir directors and other interested Church members. “Hymns, 1985,” refers to the new hymnbook recently published by the Church.
Saturday Morning, 4 October 1986 General Session
The Mormon Youth Chorus, directed by Robert C. Bowden, with organist Clay Christiansen, sang “Hark, All Ye Nations!” by Root/Mönch (Hymns, 1985, no. 264), “The Lord Is My Shepherd” by Koschat/Montgomery (Hymns, 1985, no. 108), “The Spirit of God” by Phelps (Hymns, 1985, no. 2; arr. Bowden, manuscript), “Sweet Hour of Prayer” by Bradbury/Walford (Hymns, 1985, no. 142), “Oh, What Songs of the Heart” by Clayson/Townsend (Hymns, 1985, no. 286), and “On This Day of Joy and Gladness” by Robertson (Hymns, 1985, no. 64). The congregation sang “Put Your Shoulder to the Wheel” by Thompson (Hymns, 1985, no. 252).
Saturday Afternoon, 4 October 1986 General Session
The Murray Region Family Choir, directed by Owen Clark, with organist John Longhurst, sang “The Happy Day at Last Has Come” by Beesley/ Dibble (Hymns, 1985, no. 32; arr. Clark, manuscript), “Dearest Children, God Is Near You” by Macfarlane/Walker (Hymns, 1985, no. 96; arr. Clark, manuscript), and “Let Earth’s Inhabitants Rejoice” by Robertson/Clegg (Hymns, 1985, no. 53; arr. Clark, manuscript). The congregation sang “Joseph Smith’s First Prayer” by Pond/Manwaring (Hymns, 1985, no. 26).
Saturday Evening, 4 October 1986 Priesthood Session
A combined men’s choir from the Tabernacle Choir and the Mormon Youth Chorus, directed by Jerold Ottley and Robert Bowden, with organist Robert Cundick, sang “Come, All Ye Sons of God” by Huish/Davenport (Hymns, 1985, no. 322), “Oh Say, What Is Truth?” by Melling/ Jaques (Hymns, 1985, no. 331; arr. Lyon, Deseret Book), and “The Priesthood of Our Lord” by Craven (Hymns, 1985, no. 320; arr. Longhurst, Sonos). The congregation sang “High on the Mountain Top” by Beesley/Johnson (Hymns, 1985, no. 5).
Sunday Morning, 5 October 1986 General Session
The Tabernacle Choir, directed by Jerold Ottley, with organist Robert Cundick, sang “Arise, O God, and Shine” by Darwall/Hurn (Hymns, 1985, no. 265), “More Holiness Give Me” by Bliss (Hymns, 1985, no. 131; arr. Cundick, Sonos), “Lord, Accept into Thy Kingdom” by Schreiner/ Gabbott (Hymns, 1985, no. 236), “We Ever Pray for Thee” by Stephens (Hymns, 1985, no. 23), “How Wondrous and Great” by Haydn/ Onderdonk (Hymns, 1985, no. 267; arr. Lyon, Sonos), and “Lord, I Would Follow Thee” by Dayley/McCloud (Hymns, 1985, no. 220). The congregation sang “Redeemer of Israel” by Lewis/Phelps (Hymns, 1985, no. 6).

The Tabernacle Choir, directed by Donald Ripplinger, with organist John Longhurst, sang “Let Zion in Her Beauty Rise” by Partridge (Hymns, 1985, no. 41), “Joy in the Morning” by Sleeth (Hope Publishing Co.), and “Abide with Me!” by Monk/Lyte (Hymns, 1985, no. 166; arr. Ripplinger, Jackman Music). The congregation sang “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet” by Norton/Fowler (Hymns, 1985, no. 19).
