About A.D. 421 the sacred golden plates, abridged by the Nephite prophet Mormon, were “sealed by the hand of Moroni, and hid up unto the Lord, to come forth in due time” (Book of Mormon title page). For more than fourteen hundred years the plates lay hidden. Then on the night of 21 September 1823, young Joseph Smith was visited by this same Moroni and shown the location of the buried plates. Moroni’s visit set in motion the great work of translation, publication, and distribution of what is now known as the Book of Mormon.
