The Worth of Scriptures

Almost from the very beginning, the Book of Mormon teaches us the value of scriptural records.

Articles

  • Holy Scriptures: The Power of God unto Our Salvation.” In this general conference address, Elder Robert D. Hales (1932–2017) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles testifies of the great worth the scriptures are to us and the truths we can learn as we study them.

  • Scripture Power and You.” This New Era article shares ways to draw on the power of the scriptures in your life.

  • The Precious Book of Mormon.” In this message from President Russell M. Nelson adapted for the Friend, we learn that the Book of Mormon is worth more than precious treasure.

Activities

  • The Blessings of Scripture.” This video illustrates the sacrifices that many went through to make the Bible available to God’s children.

  • Draw a picture of a favorite Book of Mormon story and send it to the Friend magazine! They will be collecting them from families all over the world this year. Learn more here, and print the submission slip here.

“I Will Go and Do”

As we pray to know God‘s will and trust in His counsel, we, like Nephi, can be empowered to go and do.

Articles

  • Trust in God, Then Go and Do.” In this general conference address, President Henry B. Eyring teaches that we show our trust in God when we listen for His message to us and then go and do whatever He asks.

  • The Power of Deliverance: Why Nephi Killed Laban.” Going and getting the brass plates meant having to confront Laban. Why was it necessary for Nephi to kill Laban? The reasons run deeper than you may think. (From the Ensign.)

  • ‘Go and Do’: The Journey to Hope.” In this New Era article, four youth share how they follow the youth theme by choosing to go and do, even amidst their own challenges.

  • A Nephi Attitude.” In this Friend story, thinking of Nephi’s example helps a boy feel more committed to finish a service project.

  • Nephi Gets the Brass Plates.” Look for an illustrated scripture story for young children in each Friend this year. Here’s the one from the January issue. These will always correspond with the Come, Follow Me reading for the month.

Activities

  • Courageous Hot Potato.” Use this activity from the Ensign to teach your family about responding faithfully to the Lord’s commandments.

  • Nephi Gets the Brass Plates.” Color this page from the Friend and put the panels in the right order to make a story booklet.

  • Lehi’s Family Studied the Scriptures.” Look for a new Book of Mormon coloring page in each Friend this year. Here’s the one from the January issue. These will always correspond with the Come, Follow Me reading for the month.

  • Book of Mormon Cutouts.” Use these scripture figures in a shadow box or as stick puppets as you talk about the beginning of 1 Nephi.
