Marching Band Hat
To make a marching band hat, you will need: red poster board 10″ x 24″ (25.5 cm x 61 cm), white poster board 4″ x 7″ (10 cm x 18 cm), blue ribbon or paper 1 1/2″ x 9″ (4 cm x 23 cm), yellow construction paper, blue crepe paper or tissue paper, scissors, staples and glue and glitter (optional).
Instructions
-
Enlarge hat pattern and copy onto red poster board. Cut out.
-
Overlap sides of hat and try it on. Adjust overlap until hat fits snugly. Staple overlapping edges together at top and bottom.
-
Enlarge visor pattern, copy onto white poster board, and cut out.
-
Every 1/2″ (1.5 cm) along top edge of visor, cut 3/4″ (2 cm) slash (see illustration). Fold clipped edge up. Center visor along bottom front edge of hat with clipped edge of visor under hat rim; staple visor in place.
-
Place blue ribbon or paper along front of hat, directly above visor. Staple each end into place.
-
To make tassel, cut six 3″ x 6″ (7.5 cm x 15 cm) pieces of crepe or tissue paper and one 1/2″ x 6″ (1.5 cm x 15 cm) piece of red poster board. Stack papers on poster board and staple lengthwise in middle. For fringe, make cuts every 1/2″ (1.5 cm) along both sides of papers, cutting to edge of poster board. Staple one end of poster board to top of hat at front (see illustration).
-
Cut three 2 1/2″ (6.5 cm) stars from yellow construction paper. Decorate with glitter if desired. Staple one star at each end of blue ribbon and one at bottom of tassel.
