Marching Band Hat

To make a marching band hat, you will need: red poster board 10″ x 24″ (25.5 cm x 61 cm), white poster board 4″ x 7″ (10 cm x 18 cm), blue ribbon or paper 1 1/2″ x 9″ (4 cm x 23 cm), yellow construction paper, blue crepe paper or tissue paper, scissors, staples and glue and glitter (optional).

Instructions

  1. Enlarge hat pattern and copy onto red poster board. Cut out.

  2. Overlap sides of hat and try it on. Adjust overlap until hat fits snugly. Staple overlapping edges together at top and bottom.

  3. Enlarge visor pattern, copy onto white poster board, and cut out.

  4. Every 1/2″ (1.5 cm) along top edge of visor, cut 3/4″ (2 cm) slash (see illustration). Fold clipped edge up. Center visor along bottom front edge of hat with clipped edge of visor under hat rim; staple visor in place.

    Fringe

    Fringe 3″ x 6″ Visor 4″ x 7″

  5. Place blue ribbon or paper along front of hat, directly above visor. Staple each end into place.

  6. To make tassel, cut six 3″ x 6″ (7.5 cm x 15 cm) pieces of crepe or tissue paper and one 1/2″ x 6″ (1.5 cm x 15 cm) piece of red poster board. Stack papers on poster board and staple lengthwise in middle. For fringe, make cuts every 1/2″ (1.5 cm) along both sides of papers, cutting to edge of poster board. Staple one end of poster board to top of hat at front (see illustration).

  7. Cut three 2 1/2″ (6.5 cm) stars from yellow construction paper. Decorate with glitter if desired. Staple one star at each end of blue ribbon and one at bottom of tassel.
