“Old Mrs. Miller,” Friend, Oct. 1990, 27
Old Mrs. Miller
Old Mrs. Miller can’t hear very well;
Her hand shakes when she waves hello.
When she puts her hat on and walks to the church,
She moves very painfully slow.
Some of the kids like to hurry on past
(They think that she gets in their way).
But I like to walk slowly and visit with her
And hear all that she has to say.
Old Mrs. Miller remembers more things
Than anyone else that I know
’Bout Model T Fords, and the first TV sets,
And wars that were fought long ago.
It’s OK with me if her hand shakes a bit
And her knees kind of crack when they bend—
I feel very lucky that she lives near me.
I’m happy that she is my friend.
