Embossed Valentine Card

To make a card, you will need: a pencil with an eraser, a 4″ (10 cm) square piece of poster board, scissors, tape, a 4″ x 8″ (10 cm x 20 cm) piece of construction paper, and a pen.

  1. Draw a heart about 2 1/2″ (6 cm) wide and tall in the center of the poster board, then cut it out and discard it.

  2. Fold the construction paper in half to make a card.

  3. Put the poster-board pattern on the front of the card and lightly tape it into place along the top and bottom.

  4. Open the card and lay it on a table with the poster-board pattern on the bottom.

  5. Using the pencil eraser, gently push against the construction paper along the edge of the heart pattern. Be careful to not press too hard and tear the paper. Check to see if the design has been embossed before removing the pattern.

  6. Write a valentine message inside the card and sign it.

Sparkling Hearts

To make the hearts, you will need: a pointed-tip container of white glue, waxed paper, red glitter, and thread or very narrow ribbon.

  1. Use the glue to draw thick outlines of hearts on the waxed paper.

  2. Sprinkle the glitter on the glue until it is completely covered. Let the hearts dry at least twenty-four hours.

  3. Shake off any excess glitter.

  4. Gently peel the hearts off the waxed paper.

  5. Tie a length of narrow ribbon or thread to each heart for hanging in a window. The hearts could also be used to decorate cards or packages.
