Serving your family by preparing a meal for them can be lots of fun. You can prepare these recipes for lunch or dinner with a parent’s or another older person’s help. The “Plum Buns” or the “Baked Apples” would also make a fun and delicious family home evening treat.

Macaroni and Cheese

6 cups water

1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/4 cups milk

1 1/2 cups grated mild cheddar cheese

  1. In a large pan, bring the water to a boil. Add the macaroni and cook 10 minutes or until tender.

  2. Carefully drain the water off the macaroni. Rinse it with cold water, drain it again, and set it aside.

  3. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the flour and the salt. Slowly mix in the milk, and cook and stir with a wire whisk until thick and bubbly.

  4. Add the cheese and stir until it is blended.

  5. Mix the macaroni into the cheese sauce; serve warm.

Plum Buns

12 paper cupcake liners

1 3/4 cups flour

1/4 cup sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg

3/4 cup milk

1/3 cup cooking oil

1/2 cup plum jelly or jam

  1. Place the paper liners in the muffin pan.

  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  3. In a small bowl, stir together the egg, milk, and cooking oil. Add these liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix just until the flour mixture is moistened.

  4. Place 1 1/2 tablespoons of the dough into the bottom of each muffin cup. Next put 1/2 tablespoon of plum jelly or jam on top of the dough. Now add 2 more tablespoons of dough.

  5. Bake at 375° F (190° C) for 18–25 minutes or until golden brown.

Baked Apples

4 medium baking apples

1 can (12 ounces/355 ml) black cherry soda pop

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

vanilla ice cream

  1. Peel and core the apples. Stand them upright in a baking dish. Pour the soda pop over the sides of the apples.

  2. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together.

  3. Fill the centers of the apples with the brown-sugar mixture.

  4. Bake uncovered at 350° F (175° C) for 1 hour, spooning the soda pop over the sides of the apples every 15 minutes.

  5. Serve the apples warm with a scoop of ice cream.
