Books of the New Testament
Starting this month in the Friend you will find the first section of a New Testament reader. These games can help you become better acquainted with the books in the New Testament.
To play, you must first carefully remove this page from the magazine. Make extra copies of the cards for additional players. Glue the cards onto heavy paper or lightweight cardboard, and cut them apart. Choose one of the games below to play by yourself, with others, or during family home evening.
Games
-
Shuffle one set of cards, then as quickly as you can, put the cards in the order the books occur in the New Testament. Time yourself to see how long it takes. Check the order in the New Testament. Try it again and see if you can do it even faster. If more than one person is playing, have a set of cards for each person and see who can put them in order the fastest.
-
Shuffle one set of cards, then see how fast two players can put them in order having the players take turns picking the next book.
-
Shuffle one set of cards, then, without peeking, remove one card from the set and put it aside. Lay down the rest of the cards and see how long it takes you to figure out which one is missing. For more than one player, see who can figure it out first. If a player guesses correctly, he or she gets to shuffle the deck and draw out the next “missing” card. If a player guesses incorrectly, he or she is out of the next round of the game.
-
Shuffle the cards and place them in a stack, facedown, on a table or the floor. Each player in turn draws a card from the deck, then he or she must tell a story or teaching found in that book of the New Testament. Allow each player to use their scriptures. You may want to set a time limit and have the player return the card to the bottom of the pile if he or she hasn’t found a story or teaching within the time limit.
-
For family home evening, have one person find well-known scriptures in the New Testament. After quoting the scripture, the other family members guess which book of the New Testament the scripture is from.
-
Shuffle two sets of cards together, then lay them facedown on a table or the floor. Players take turns turning over two cards, trying to find a matching pair. If the cards match, the player keeps them and takes another turn. If they do not match, the cards are turned back over, and it is the next player’s turn.
