Scripture Carrier, a Gift for Dad

To make a carrier for your father’s scriptures, or for your own, you will need: scissors, ruler, 18″ (46 cm) of vinyl* or other heavy fabric, two 14″ (36 cm) lengths of 3/4″ (2 cm) wide grosgrain ribbon in a color to go with the vinyl or fabric, one 3″ (8 cm) strip of 3/4″ (2 cm) wide Velcro fastener, and a needle and thread or a sewing machine.

Instructions

  1. Cut the vinyl or fabric into the following pieces:

    • One 10″ x 16″ (25 cm x 41 cm) piece (main cover)

    • Two 5 1/4″ x 10″ (13 cm x 25 cm) pieces (inside flaps)

    • Two 2″ x 14″ (5 cm x 36 cm) strips (handles)

    • One 2 3/4″ x 6 1/2″ (7 cm x 16.5 cm) piece (fastener flap)

  2. Fold each handle piece lengthwise, with the right side in, and sew, forming a tube. Turn the tube right side out, press it flat, then pin the ribbon down the center of each handle and sew both edges of it to the handle.

  3. Pin the handles on the shorter edges of the cover piece on the right side of the fabric, the loops facing the center (see figure 1).

  4. Sew one part of the Velcro down the center of the wrong side of the fastener flap. Sew the other part of the Velcro to the center of the outside front of the main cover piece. It should run parallel to the long edge and begin 1″ (2.5 cm) from the short edge. Pin the fastener flap to the center of the short front edge of the carrier, with the right sides of the fabric together (see figure 1).

  5. Attach the right side of the end flaps to the right side of each end of the main cover by sewing around three sides (see figure 2). You will be attaching the handles and the fastener flap at the same time. Turn the flaps right side out.

  6. Fold in the edges of the cover between the flaps (see figure 3). Sew a small 1/4″ (6 mm) seam around the entire outside edge of the carrier (see figure 4).

The carrier will hold a regular-size Bible and triple combination.

  • If you use vinyl, it is best to make this craft on a sewing machine.
