Guide to the Friend

The Guide to the Friend can help you find stories or articles for preparing lessons or talks for church or for family home evening. The Primary theme for June is “Heavenly Father teaches me how to strengthen my family.”

Family Home Evening Ideas

Look for the FHE symbol on the [original magazine] pages mentioned below.

  1. Read President Thomas S. Monson’s “The Race” (pages 2–3). What can you learn from John’s example? (Determination, endurance, courage, etc.) What are some situations in life that will require you to have courage? To help you remember that God helps us with our challenges, learn and sing “How Firm a Foundation” (Hymns, no. 85).

  2. Read “An Answered Prayer” (pages 4–7). Why is it important to pray often, even if we sometimes pray for the same things? Discuss times the Lord has answered your prayers to protect you or someone you love. Then review “Let’s Talk about It” (page 7) to learn about fire safety.

  3. “The Family: A Proclamation to the World” states that establishing a successful family includes participating in “wholesome recreational activities” (Ensign, Nov. 1995, 102). Read “I Love My Family” (pages 24–25) to see how one family spends time together. Write a poem or draw pictures of your favorite family activities (or things you’d like to do together in the future). Choose an activity, plan it, and carry it out sometime during the month.

  4. To learn more about being a missionary, read “Missionary Work” (page 31) and use some of the activity ideas listed. Read “Scriptures in a Suitcase” (pages 28–30), and think of ways you can share the gospel this week.

  5. Read “100% Correct, A+!” (pages 40–42). How does the boy in the story show love for his father? Examples of good fathers are found in the scriptures. Complete “Scripture Fathers” (page 23) to learn about some of them. To honor your dad or a man you admire (a grandfather, bishop, neighbor, etc.), make him a “Bagel Dad” (page 34).
