Jane Manning James

Jane Manning James

1822–1908

“We went … rejoicing, singing hymns, and thanking God.”

  • She joined the Church in Connecticut, USA.

  • Her family walked more than 800 miles (1287 km) to join the Saints in Nauvoo. When their feet bled, they prayed to be healed, and God answered their prayers.

  • Joseph Smith said she had great faith.

  • Even though she faced many challenges, she was faithful to the gospel all her life.

From James Goldberg, “The Autobiography of Jane Manning James,” Church History, Dec. 11, 2013, history.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

Parley P. Pratt

Parley P. Pratt

1807–1857

“The Spirit of the Lord was upon me, and I knew … the Book [of Mormon] was true.”

  • When he first read the Book of Mormon, he couldn’t stop. He read it all day and all night.

  • He served missions in Canada, England, Chile, and islands in the South Pacific.

  • He wrote hymns we still sing today, like “Jesus, Once of Humble Birth” (Hymns, no. 196).

  • He was one of the first Apostles called in the restored Church.
