Kiribati (kee-ruh-bas) is an island country in the Pacific Ocean. About 120,000 people live there.

Kiribati’s tiny islands are spread out over 1.4 million square miles (3.5 million km²) of ocean! Its place on the globe puts it in the first time zone to see the light of each new day.

Beautiful Beaches

Kiribati is full of sandy beaches and palm trees. It’s warm all year long.

Bright Examples

Almost 20 percent of the people are Church members. They are good examples for others who live on the islands.

Go Fish!

Since the ocean is all around them, people in Kiribati eat lots of seafood. Coconut, rice, and pumpkin are also common.

A Temple on the Way

In October 2020, President Russell M. Nelson announced that a temple will be built in Kiribati! Here’s what it will look like.

Animal Dance

Dancing is an important part of life in Kiribati. Their dances are inspired by their national bird, the frigate bird. The dancers stretch their arms out like wings while they move.

What’s your favorite animal? Think about how it moves. Then create a dance inspired by that animal. Ask some friends to join you!

Recipe

Pumpkin Coconut Soup

1. Pour a little coconut oil in a pot. Add 1 diced onion and cook over medium heat until the onions have started to brown.

2. Add 2 cups pumpkin puree, 2 cups coconut milk, and 4 cups chicken broth. Mix well.

3. Bring the soup to a boil, then turn down the heat and let it simmer for 20 minutes.

4. If you want, add salt, pepper, ginger, or other spices.
